Tacna is Peru's southernmost city, close to the Chilean border in the coastal desert. It is a commercial city built on cross-border trade, with a compact centre around a cathedral designed in the Eiffel workshops.
The cathedral and the ornate iron fountain on the main square both came from the Eiffel workshops and are the city's architectural distinction. Tacna has strong patriotic associations from the period when the region was under Chilean administration, commemorated at a battlefield museum outside the city, and the Atacama desert and the Chilean border town of Arica lie south.
The centre is walkable and taxis cover the city. Shared cars and buses cross to Arica in around two hours including border formalities, and the Pan-American highway runs north.
The coastal desert is dry year-round with mild temperatures. The southern summer is warmer and clearer, and the mid-year months bring coastal cloud.
Peru uses the PEN, calling code +51.
Peru uses the sol, with Chilean pesos also circulating near the border, and Spanish is the language. Cash is useful for the border crossing and markets.
