Tabora lies in central Tanzania on the plateau, and grew as the principal inland staging post on the nineteenth-century caravan routes between the coast and the interior. The town is spread out beneath mango trees planted along its avenues.
The Livingstone Memorial Museum at Kwihara outside the town occupies the tembe house where the explorer stayed, and is the town's historic distinction. The town's caravan-era history and its position as a rail junction are its character, and the miombo woodland around it is the landscape.
Shared vehicles and motorcycle taxis cover the town. Tabora is a junction on the central railway line, with connections toward Dar es Salaam, Kigoma and Mwanza, though journeys are long.
