Surgut lies on the Ob river in western Siberia, in the middle of Russia's principal oil-producing region. It is a modern city built up rapidly around that industry, with apartment blocks raised on piles above permafrost-affected ground.
The city is industrial rather than a destination, though the Yugra bridge across the Ob is among the longest cable-stayed single-pylon spans in the world. The surrounding taiga and the Ob floodplain are the landscape, and the region's indigenous Khanty culture is documented in local museums.
Buses cover the city and taxis fill the gaps. Rail and air connections run to Moscow and across Siberia, and distances in the region are very large.
Summer is short, mild and brings long daylight, and is much the best time. Winters are long and severely cold with very short days.
