Sumida is a ward in eastern Tokyo rather than a separate city, on the east bank of the Sumida river. It is a traditional shitamachi district of small workshops and older streets, now dominated on the skyline by a single enormous structure.
Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in the world, stands in the ward with observation decks and a large shopping complex at its base. Ryōgoku is the centre of sumo, with the national stadium hosting three tournaments a year and a sumo museum, and the Edo-Tokyo Museum nearby covers the city's history.
Several rail and metro lines serve the ward with quick connections across Tokyo. The riverside path and the Skytree area are walkable, and water buses run down the Sumida to Asakusa and the bay.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, and the Sumida river fireworks in summer are one of Tokyo's great events. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cold but clear.
