Sochi runs for many kilometres along the Black Sea coast in southern Russia, backed closely by the Caucasus mountains. It is Russia's principal seaside resort, with the central district around the seaport and newer development in the Adler and Krasnaya Polyana areas built for the Winter Olympics.
The subtropical coastline and the arboretum on the hillside above the centre are the traditional draws, and the climate here is unusual for Russia. Krasnaya Polyana in the mountains inland holds the ski resorts developed for the Olympics, and the Olympic park at Adler retains its venues and hosts motor racing.
Trains and buses run the length of the coastal strip, and a rail line climbs to the mountain resorts. The city is long and narrow, so transport is needed between its parts.
Summer is the beach season and is warm and humid, while winter is the ski season in the mountains above, which makes the area unusual in offering both. Spring and autumn are mild and quieter.
