Smolensk stands on the Dnieper in western Russia near the Belarusian border, on hills either side of the river. The old centre is enclosed by long stretches of a massive early seventeenth-century brick fortress wall, which is the city's defining structure.
The fortress walls and towers, among the largest such fortifications ever built in Russia, can be walked in sections and are the principal sight. The Assumption Cathedral on its hill above the river holds an ornate carved iconostasis and survived the wars that repeatedly devastated the city.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city, and the historic centre is walkable though hilly. Trains connect to Moscow in around four hours and to Minsk across the border.
Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant. Winters are cold with reliable snow and short daylight.
