Şişli is a district on the European side of Istanbul north of the historic peninsula, and is largely commercial and residential rather than historic. It includes the Nişantaşı quarter, the city's principal upmarket shopping area, and reaches toward the business towers of Levent.
The district is modern Istanbul rather than Ottoman, and Nişantaşı's streets are its most characterful part. Taksim Square and the İstiklal Avenue pedestrian street are on its southern edge, and the historic peninsula with Hagia Sophia and the bazaars is a short metro ride further.
Metro lines cross the district with quick connections south to Taksim and the historic core. The area is walkable within itself, and traffic on the main roads is consistently heavy.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable in Istanbul. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cold and damp with occasional snow.
