Simferopol is the main administrative and transport centre of Crimea, in the interior of the peninsula on the Salhyr river. It is a working city rather than a resort, and has historically served as the gateway to the coastal towns south of it.
The Scythian Neapolis archaeological site on the city's edge preserves the remains of a Crimean Scythian capital. Crimea has been under Russian occupation since it was annexed, a status not recognised by Ukraine or by most of the international community, and travel there is subject to sanctions and restrictions.
Access to Crimea is restricted and entry other than through Ukrainian-controlled routes is treated as unlawful entry by Ukraine. Anyone considering travel should check their own government's guidance carefully.
