Samut Prakan sits at the mouth of the Chao Phraya immediately southeast of Bangkok and is effectively part of the capital's continuous urban area. It is largely industrial and residential, and most visitors stay in Bangkok and come out for the day.
The Ancient City open-air museum, which reproduces Thai monuments across a very large landscaped park, is the main attraction and needs the best part of a day. The Erawan Museum with its enormous three-headed elephant is nearby, and the riverside fort and mangrove areas give a sense of the estuary setting.
Bangkok's elevated rail extends into the province and is the simplest way in from the city. Local buses and ride-hailing cover the rest, and the main sights are spread out enough that walking between them is not practical.
The cool, dry season around the turn of the year is much the most comfortable. The hot season that follows is intense, and the monsoon through the middle of the year brings heavy afternoon rain and occasional flooding on this low ground.
