Saltivka is a large residential district in the northeast of Kharkiv rather than a separate city, built in the Soviet period as high-density housing estates. It is among the largest residential districts of its kind in the country and is entirely residential in character.
There are no visitor attractions within the district itself, which is housing, local shops and schools. Central Kharkiv, with its very large main square, university buildings and parks, lies to the southwest and is where the city's cultural life is concentrated.
A metro line runs into the district and is the main connection to the city centre, supplemented by trams and buses. Within the district, distances between blocks are walkable but the scale is large and repetitive.
The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters that bring reliable snow. Late spring and early autumn are the mildest periods.
