Rustenburg lies at the foot of the Magaliesberg range in North West province, and is the centre of the world's largest platinum-mining region. The town centre is compact and commercial, with mining settlements and residential areas spreading across the surrounding plain.
The Magaliesberg range immediately south of the town offers hiking and views and is the main natural draw. The Pilanesberg game reserve, set in an ancient volcanic crater, and the resort complex at Sun City are both a short drive away and are the region's best-known attractions.
A car is effectively necessary given the distances between the town and the reserves. Roads to Johannesburg and Pretoria are good and the drive takes under two hours.
The dry winter months are the best for game viewing, as vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water. Summers are hot with afternoon thunderstorms and much greener landscapes.
