Rosetta, known in Arabic as Rashid, stands at the western mouth of the Nile on the Mediterranean coast east of Alexandria. It is a quiet fishing and agricultural town with a remarkable stock of Ottoman-era brick houses.
The town gave its name to the Rosetta Stone, found nearby, whose trilingual inscription unlocked Egyptian hieroglyphs; the stone itself is in the British Museum, but the town's role is its claim on history. Around two dozen Ottoman merchant houses survive in distinctive red and black brick, several open to visitors, and the point where the Nile meets the sea is a short trip.
The town is small and walkable, with microbuses connecting along the coast. Alexandria is around ninety minutes away by road.
The cooler months from autumn to early spring are the most comfortable, and the Mediterranean moderates the heat year-round. Summers are hot and humid.

Egypt uses the Egyptian pound, and Arabic is the language with limited English in the town. Cash is used for most transactions.
