Ras Al Khaimah is the northernmost emirate of the United Arab Emirates, where the Hajar mountains meet the Gulf coast. The city is split between an older quarter on a creek and newer development along the beaches, and it is markedly quieter than Dubai.
Jebel Jais, the highest mountain in the country, is the main draw, with a mountain road, viewing decks and one of the world's longest zip lines. The abandoned village of Al Jazirah Al Hamra, the desert and mangrove areas, and the emirate's beaches are the other attractions.
A car is effectively necessary, as the emirate is spread out and public transport is limited. Dubai is around an hour's drive south along the coast road.
The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are much the most comfortable, and the mountain is noticeably cooler than the coast year-round. Summers are extremely hot and humid.
