Quelimane lies on the Bons Sinais river a short distance inland from the Indian Ocean in central Mozambique. It is a low-lying port town with a compact centre of faded Portuguese colonial buildings, surrounded by coconut plantations.
The colonial-era cathedral and the riverside are the town's main features, and the waterfront is where daily life concentrates. The town is known for being flat enough that bicycles dominate, and the coconut plantations around it were once among the largest in the world.
Bicycles and bicycle taxis are the characteristic local transport on the flat ground, supplemented by shared minibuses. Roads north and south along the coast are long, and the airport connects to Maputo and Beira.
