Qibao is a town within Minhang district in southwest Shanghai rather than a separate city. Around a small preserved canal quarter it is a busy residential and commercial area, and most visitors come as a half-day trip from central Shanghai.
Qibao Ancient Town is a compact water town of canals, stone bridges and old lanes, crowded with snack stalls selling local specialities. Small museums cover traditional crafts and the local passion for cricket fighting, and weekday mornings are much calmer than weekends.
Qibao has its own station on Shanghai Metro, making it an easy trip from the city centre. The old town is entirely walkable, and taxis and ride-hailing cover the surrounding district.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Early summer brings the humid plum rains, midsummer is very hot and sticky, and winters are chilly and damp. Public holidays bring very large crowds.
