Pyeongtaek lies south of Seoul on the west coast of South Korea, and combines a port, industrial estates and a very large United States military base. The presence of the base gives parts of the city an unusually international character.
The city is functional rather than a destination, with its port and industry the dominant features. The coastal wetlands and the port area are the main local interest, and Seoul is close enough by rail to be an easy day trip.
Rail connections to Seoul take around an hour, and buses cover the city. Distances between the port, the base and the centre are considerable, so local transport or a car is needed.
Spring and autumn are mild and much the best seasons. Summers are hot and humid with a distinct monsoon period, and winters are cold and dry with strong winds off the Yellow Sea.
