The port and the riverside markets are the town's daily life. Lake Yarinacocha just outside is the main attraction, an oxbow lake with Shipibo communities along its shores whose textiles and pottery are among the most distinctive Amazonian crafts, and river trips into the surrounding forest depart from here.
Motorcycle rickshaws dominate the streets. Boats work the river and the lake, and the road over the Andes to Lima is long, spectacular and can be affected by landslides.
The climate is hot and humid year-round with no dry season, though river levels vary. The lower-water months make beaches and trails accessible while high water opens more of the flooded forest to boats.

Peru uses the sol, and Spanish is the language with Shipibo and other Amazonian languages spoken in the region. Manner is relaxed, and cash is needed once you leave the town centre.
