    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Plovdiv is built across a group of hills on the Maritsa in southern Bulgaria and is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The Old Town on the hills holds painted nineteenth-century revival houses, while Kapana below is a grid of small streets now full of bars and studios.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The Roman theatre, excavated after a landslide revealed it and now used for performances again, is one of the best-preserved anywhere. The Roman stadium runs beneath the main pedestrian street with a section exposed, the Old Town houses are open as museums, and the Kapana district is the centre of the city's contemporary life.
