Pingyin is a county town southwest of Jinan in Shandong, on the southern bank of the Yellow River. It is a modest agricultural centre, and the surrounding hills are given over to orchards and rose cultivation.
The town is nationally known for rose growing, and the fields around it are at their most striking when in flower in late spring. The Yellow River and the limestone hills nearby are the local landscape, and Jinan with its springs is a short drive away.
Buses and taxis cover the town, and the centre is small enough to walk. Reaching the rose fields and the river needs a taxi or hired car.
Late spring is the obvious time, when the roses are in flower and the weather is mild. Summers are hot and humid, and winters on the Shandong plain are cold and dry.

China uses the renminbi, quoted in yuan, and Mandarin is the standard language. Mobile payment is near-universal and cash is increasingly awkward, so arranging a method in advance matters.
