Petrozavodsk is the capital of the Republic of Karelia in northwestern Russia, on the western shore of Lake Onega. Founded by Peter the Great as an ironworks, it has a compact centre running down to a long lakeside embankment.
The embankment is lined with sculptures given by twin cities around the world, and the lake views are especially lovely during the white nights. In summer, hydrofoils cross the lake to Kizhi Island and its extraordinary wooden churches, a World Heritage site, and the Kivach waterfall is within reach.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city, and the centre is easily walked. Trains connect Petrozavodsk with St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Summer, from June to August, is the best time, with long daylight hours and boats running to Kizhi. Winters are long, cold and snowy, and the lake freezes over.

Russia uses the ruble, and Russian is the language, with Karelian and Finnish heritage visible locally. Cards issued abroad generally do not work in Russia, so payment needs planning, and English is limited.
