The town's literary association is its distinction: the poet Tao Yuanming served briefly as magistrate here before resigning to return to farming, a story well known in Chinese literature. Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake and a major wintering site for migratory birds including Siberian cranes, lies nearby.
Buses and taxis cover the town and the centre is compact. Rail and road connections run along the Yangtze corridor toward Jiujiang and Nanchang.
Autumn is mild and clear and the most comfortable, and winter is the season for the migratory birds at Poyang. Summers in the Yangtze valley are hot and humid with a plum-rain period.
