Pasto sits high in the Andes of southern Colombia in a valley beneath the Galeras volcano, close to the Ecuadorian border. The centre is colonial in layout around its main square and churches, and the altitude gives it a cool climate quite unlike the Colombian lowlands.
The colonial churches of the centre and the surrounding volcanic landscape are the main draws, with the Laguna de la Cocha east of the city a popular excursion. The city is nationally known for its early-January carnival, a UNESCO-recognised celebration involving black and white paint that fills the streets.
The centre is compact and walkable, though the altitude makes the hills more tiring than they look. Buses and shared taxis cover the city, and road connections run south to the border and north along the Andean spine.
The altitude keeps temperatures cool and fairly constant year-round, with frequent cloud and drizzle rather than distinct seasons. Visitors arriving from the coast should allow a little time to adjust to the elevation.
