Palu sits at the head of a long narrow bay in central Sulawesi, hemmed in by steep mountains on both sides, which gives the city an unusually dramatic setting. The centre is on the flat ground around the river mouth, with residential districts climbing the slopes on either side of the bay.
The bay and the mountain walls around it are the defining view, best seen in the clear light of morning. The city was severely affected by a major earthquake and tsunami and parts of the waterfront remain marked by it, which visitors should be aware of and treat with sensitivity.
Shared minibuses and motorcycle taxis are the usual way to get around, with ride-hailing available in the centre. The valley floor is flat and walkable in parts, while anything up the slopes requires transport.
