    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Palmas is the capital of Tocantins in central Brazil and is among the youngest state capitals in the country, planned and built from nothing on the bank of a reservoir on the Tocantins river. It is laid out on a grid of very wide avenues with numbered blocks rather than street names.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The city is a planned administrative capital rather than a historic destination, and its scale and layout are its distinguishing feature. The reservoir provides freshwater beaches at the city's edge, and Jalapão further east, with its orange dunes, springs and waterfalls, is one of Brazil's outstanding wilderness areas.

    Transit notes

The city is designed around cars and the blocks are very large, so walking between them is impractical. Buses cover the grid, and reaching Jalapão requires a four-wheel-drive trip of several days.

    Seasons & timing

The dry months from around May to September are much the best, particularly for Jalapão. The wet season brings heavy rain and makes the unsealed tracks difficult, and the climate is hot year-round.

    🇧🇷 BRL

Brazil uses the BRL, calling code +55.
