Ostrava is Czechia's third city, in the northeast near the Polish border, and was long the country's coal and steel capital. The centre around Masaryk Square is compact, with the lively bar street of Stodolní nearby, and the former industrial zones have been transformed into cultural spaces.
Dolní Vítkovice, a former ironworks complex, is now a spectacular cultural site where visitors can climb to a viewing platform atop a blast furnace. The Landek Park mining museum takes visitors underground, and the tower of the New City Hall offers wide views.
An extensive tram network covers the city, supplemented by buses and trolleybuses. Trains connect to Prague and to Kraków and Katowice in Poland, and the Beskydy mountains are close by.
Summer is the liveliest season, when a major international music festival fills the industrial grounds in July. Spring and early autumn are pleasant, and winters are cold.
