Osh is the second city of Kyrgyzstan, at the eastern edge of the Fergana valley near the Uzbek border, and claims a history stretching back three thousand years. The city is built around the rock of Sulaiman-Too, which rises abruptly from the middle of it.
Sulaiman-Too is a World Heritage site, a sacred mountain with shrines, petroglyphs and cave sanctuaries, climbed by pilgrims and giving a wide view over the valley. The Jayma bazaar along the river is among the largest and most atmospheric in Central Asia, and the city is the starting point for the Pamir Highway south.
Shared taxis and minibuses cover the city, and the bazaar and the mountain are walkable from the centre. Osh is the road gateway to the Pamirs and to the Chinese border crossings.
Late spring through early autumn is much the best, and is the only sensible window for the mountain roads south. Summers in the Fergana valley are hot, and winters are cold.
