Orël stands where two rivers meet in western Russia, south of Moscow. It is a provincial city with a compact centre, and is known above all for its literary associations.
The city is the birthplace of Ivan Turgenev and is closely linked to several other major Russian writers, with a cluster of literary museums that is unusual for a city of this size. Turgenev's family estate at Spasskoye-Lutovinovo, where he wrote much of his work, lies within the region and is preserved.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city and the centre is walkable. Trains reach Moscow in around five hours, and reaching the estate needs a car or local bus.
Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant, and the estate grounds are at their best then. Winters are cold with reliable snow.

Russia uses the rouble, and Russian is the language with little English. International cards do not generally function, so payment arrangements need making in advance.
