Oral, also written Uralsk, stands on the Ural river in far western Kazakhstan, close to the Russian border. The river is conventionally taken as part of the boundary between Europe and Asia, which gives the city a claim to sit across both.
The old merchant quarter retains nineteenth-century buildings from the city's Cossack and trading past, unusual for the region. The city has literary associations with Pushkin, who came here researching a Cossack rebellion, and the surrounding steppe and river floodplain are the regional landscape.
Buses and taxis cover the city and the old centre is walkable. Rail connections run east across Kazakhstan and north into Russia, and distances are very large.
Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable. Summers on the steppe are very hot and winters are severely cold with strong winds.
