Okazaki sits in Aichi prefecture between Nagoya and Toyota, on the Yahagi River. The centre near the castle park and the older streets along the river hold most of what visitors come for, with newer development spreading outward across the plain.
Okazaki Castle is the city's principal sight as the birthplace of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the surrounding park is among the region's better cherry blossom locations in spring. The city is the traditional home of hatchō miso, aged in wooden barrels at long-established breweries near the river that can be visited.
Two rail lines serve the city and connect quickly to Nagoya. The castle and the miso district are within walking distance of each other, and buses cover the wider city.
Spring is the most popular season for the blossom around the castle, and autumn is mild and clear. Summers on this plain are hot and humid, and winters are cool but generally dry.
