Neiva lies in the upper Magdalena valley in southern Colombia, in a hot, dry basin between two Andean ranges. The city is a regional commercial centre, with the river along its eastern edge and a compact centre around the main square.
The Tatacoa desert north of the city is the main regional attraction, an arid badlands of red and grey formations that is also one of Colombia's best places for stargazing given the clear dry skies. The archaeological park at San Agustín with its pre-Columbian statuary lies further south in the department.
The centre is walkable and taxis cover the city. Reaching the Tatacoa requires a bus and then local transport, and the main road runs north toward Bogotá.
The valley is hot and dry year-round and noticeably warmer than the Andean cities. The drier periods are the best for the desert, and clear nights there are the main reason to time a visit.
