Natore is a district town in the Rajshahi division of northwestern Bangladesh, set on the flat alluvial plain among rice fields and mango orchards. The centre is built around its bazaar and the main road, with the old palace grounds forming a green edge to the town.
The Natore Rajbari, the sprawling estate of a former zamindar family, is the town's principal sight, with its ponds, gardens and decaying pavilions. Uttara Gonobhaban, a former royal residence used as a state guest house, is also here, and the surrounding district is known for its mango and lychee orchards.
Rickshaws and auto-rickshaws cover the town and the palace grounds are walkable once inside. Buses and trains connect to Rajshahi and onward toward Dhaka, and journeys by road are slow.
The cool, dry months around the turn of the year are much the most comfortable. The monsoon through the middle of the year brings heavy rain and flooding on the plain, and the pre-monsoon period is very hot.
