Naha is the capital of Okinawa, on the southwestern coast of the main island, and the culture here is distinctly Ryukyuan rather than mainland Japanese. Kokusai-dori is the main commercial street, and the port area and Shuri district on the hill above are the other centres.
Shuri Castle, the seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom and a World Heritage site, was severely damaged by fire and is being rebuilt, with the reconstruction itself open to view. Tsuboya pottery street preserves the Okinawan ceramic tradition, the Makishi public market is excellent for local food, and the island's wartime memorial sites in the south are significant and sobering.
A monorail runs from the airport through the city to Shuri and is the easiest way around. Buses reach the rest of the island, and a car is needed for the northern beaches and the outlying areas.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid with a significant typhoon risk, and winters are mild by Japanese standards, which is Okinawa's great draw.
