Nagano sits in a mountain basin in central Honshu and grew up around the Zenkōji temple, with the main approach street running from the station to the temple gate. The city hosted the Winter Olympics, and the surrounding mountains hold many of Japan's best-known ski areas.
Zenkōji is one of Japan's most important and oldest temples and is the reason the city exists, with an underground passage beneath the main hall that pilgrims walk in darkness. The snow monkeys bathing in hot springs at Jigokudani north of the city are the other major draw and are at their most photogenic in winter.
The shinkansen reaches Tokyo in around ninety minutes, and the temple approach is walkable from the station. Buses and local trains reach the ski areas and the monkey park, and mountain roads can close in winter.
Winter is the main season for the ski areas and the snow monkeys, and the basin gets heavy snow. Autumn brings excellent colour in the surrounding mountains, and summers are warm but cooler than the lowlands.
