Murmansk lies well inside the Arctic Circle on the Kola peninsula in northwestern Russia, on a fjord that stays ice-free year-round thanks to the Gulf Stream. It is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle anywhere, built up the hillsides above the port.
The Alyosha monument, an enormous concrete soldier on the hill above the city, commemorates the Arctic convoys and defence of the north and gives the best view over the fjord. The nuclear icebreaker Lenin is moored as a museum, and the region is a well-known destination for the northern lights and for Sami culture in the tundra beyond.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city, which is steep in places. Reaching the tundra and the aurora viewing areas requires an organised trip or hired car.
Winter, from around September to March, is aurora season and the reason most visitors come, though the polar night means weeks without sunrise in midwinter. Summer brings the midnight sun and milder walking weather.
