Meguro is a ward in southwestern Tokyo rather than a separate city, largely residential and comfortably off. Nakameguro along the canal and Jiyugaoka in the south are its best-known quarters, both known for small shops and cafés.
The Meguro river through Nakameguro is lined with cherry trees and is among Tokyo's most popular blossom spots, illuminated in the evening during the season. The Institute of Parasitology holds a small and genuinely startling museum, and Jiyugaoka's boutiques and bakeries are a pleasant afternoon.
Several rail lines cross the ward with quick connections to Shibuya and central Tokyo. The ward is walkable in its individual quarters, and the riverside path links several of them.
Spring for the blossom along the river is the obvious time and is extremely busy. Autumn is mild and clear, summers are hot and humid, and winters are cold but dry.
