Mazatlán runs along the Pacific coast of Sinaloa, with a restored nineteenth-century old town at the southern end and a long hotel strip stretching north along the beaches. The old town around Plazuela Machado holds most of the character, while the Zona Dorada is the resort quarter.
The malecón running for several kilometres along the seafront is among the longest in the world and is the centre of the city's evening life. The restored old town with its theatre and painted houses is the more interesting half, and cliff divers perform along the southern shore.
Open-sided pulmonía taxis are a local institution and the characteristic way of moving along the seafront. The old town is walkable, buses run the length of the malecón, and ferries cross the Gulf of California to the Baja peninsula.
The cooler, drier months from late autumn to spring are the most comfortable and are the main season. Summers are hot and humid with a rainy season and hurricane risk running into the autumn.
