Manukau is a large district in the south of Auckland rather than a separate city, having been merged into the wider council. It is residential and industrial, and is home to one of the largest Pacific Islander populations of any city in the world.
The district's character comes from its Pacific and Māori communities, whose markets and food are its distinctive draw. The Botanic Gardens are here, the airport sits within the district, and the black-sand west coast beaches and central Auckland are both a drive away.
Rail and bus links connect to central Auckland, and the district is spread out enough that a car is helpful. The motorway network runs through it, connecting the airport with the rest of the region.
The southern summer from around December to March is warm and settled and much the best for the coast. Winters are mild but wet and windy, and the weather changes quickly in any season.
