Makurdi is the capital of Benue State in central Nigeria, built on both banks of the Benue River with a bridge linking the two halves. The commercial centre and the markets sit on the south bank, and the town spreads modestly along the water.
The river and its bridge are the town's defining feature, and the riverbank is where much of daily life happens, particularly in the cooler parts of the day. The surrounding state is Nigeria's principal food-producing region, and the markets reflect that abundance.
Shared taxis, minibuses and motorcycle taxis are the standard transport, and the centre is walkable in the cooler hours. Road connections run north toward Jos and south toward Enugu.
The climate is tropical with a long rainy season through the middle of the year and a dry season around the turn of the year. The dry months are hotter but far easier for road travel, and the harmattan haze can settle over the town.
