The city is a quiet prefectural capital rather than a destination in itself, though the Gunma prefectural museums and the riverside parks are pleasant. The real draws are in the surrounding prefecture: the Tomioka silk mill, a World Heritage site, and the hot spring resorts of Kusatsu and Ikaho in the mountains.
Trains connect to Takasaki and onward to Tokyo, and buses reach the hot spring towns. A car is helpful for the mountains.
Spring and autumn are mild and the most comfortable, with autumn colour in the mountains. Summers on the Kanto plain are hot and humid, and winters are cold and dry with strong local winds.
