Lobito sits on a natural harbour on Angola's central coast, with the town partly built along a long sandy spit known as the Restinga that encloses the bay. The spit holds much of the seafront accommodation and restaurants, while the commercial centre and the port sit on the mainland behind.
The Restinga and its beaches are the town's defining feature and are best in the late afternoon when the light softens. Lobito is the Atlantic terminus of the Benguela railway that runs deep into the interior, and the port and rail infrastructure are a visible part of the town's character.
The spit is long and narrow and easily walked along its length, with taxis and minibuses covering the distance to the mainland centre. The neighbouring city of Benguela is a short drive along the coast.
The coastal climate is warm and comparatively dry, moderated by the cold Benguela current offshore. The middle months of the year are cooler and often overcast, while the southern summer is hotter with occasional rain.
