Lincang lies in southwestern Yunnan near the Myanmar border, in mountainous country cut by the Lancang river, which becomes the Mekong further downstream. The prefecture centre is modest, and the region is heavily forested and ethnically diverse.
The region is one of the historic homelands of tea, with ancient tea trees in the mountains and villages producing the pressed pu-erh style. The mountain scenery, the terraced tea gardens and the Wa, Dai and Lahu communities of the border country are the main draws.
Buses and taxis cover the town, and reaching the tea mountains requires a hired car on winding roads. The airport connects to Kunming, and the new railway through Yunnan has improved access considerably.
Spring is the tea-picking season and the most interesting time to visit the mountains. The summer rains make roads difficult, and winters are mild at this latitude though cool at altitude.
