Lichinga is the capital of Niassa, Mozambique's most remote and sparsely populated province, set on a high plateau in the far northwest. Its altitude gives it a surprisingly cool climate, and the small, orderly town is the jumping-off point for Lake Niassa and the northern wilderness.
The town itself is quiet, with busy local markets. The shore of Lake Niassa, known elsewhere as Lake Malawi, lies a few hours west, with clear water and fishing villages, and the vast Niassa Special Reserve to the northeast is one of Africa's largest protected wilderness areas.
Chapas, the local minibuses, and taxis cover the town, and flights connect to other Mozambican cities. Roads in the region can be rough and slow, particularly in the rainy season.
