Lhoka, also written Shannan, lies southeast of Lhasa in the Yarlung valley of Tibet, at high altitude on the Yarlung Tsangpo river. The valley is regarded as the cradle of Tibetan civilisation, and the town itself is a modest modern administrative centre.
Samye, the first Buddhist monastery built in Tibet, lies in the valley and is laid out as a mandala, and is the principal site in the region. The Yumbulagang, said to be the oldest building in Tibet, stands on a ridge above the valley, and the Yarlung landscape itself is the setting for much of Tibetan foundational history.
Buses and hired vehicles cover the valley, and travel here generally requires permits and an organised itinerary for foreign visitors. The altitude is substantial and acclimatisation in Lhasa first is strongly advisable.
Late spring through early autumn is much the best, with milder temperatures and open roads. Winters are very cold and some routes become difficult, and the altitude makes the sun fierce in any season.
