Lekki is a fast-growing district on the peninsula east of Lagos Island, made up of numbered phases and gated estates strung along a single main corridor. It is newer and more planned than most of Lagos, and is where much recent residential and commercial development has concentrated.
The Atlantic beaches along the peninsula are the main draw and are best earlier in the day before the heat and crowds build. A conservation centre with a canopy walkway preserves a patch of the original wetland forest, and central Lagos with its markets and museums is a drive away to the west.
Traffic along the single main road through the peninsula is the defining constraint, and journey times vary enormously with the time of day. Ride-hailing is the practical way to get around, and boat services across the lagoon avoid the road entirely for some trips.
The climate is tropical with a long rainy season through the middle of the year and a drier period around the turn of the year. The drier months are more comfortable, though the harmattan haze can reduce visibility at that time.
