The city is a working local centre rather than a destination, and it is known regionally for a tradition of wooden puppetry and for its peanut and dairy farming. Qingdao, with its German colonial quarter, beaches and brewery, is around an hour away and is the regional draw.
Buses and taxis cover the city and the centre is compact. Rail and expressway connections run to Qingdao and across the Shandong peninsula.
Spring and autumn are mild and the most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid, and winters on the peninsula are cold and windy.
