The city is internationally known in medicine as the home of the Ilizarov Centre, where the external fixation method for lengthening and reconstructing bone was developed, and there is a museum devoted to it. The Decembrist house museums preserve homes of exiles sent here, and the surrounding steppe and lakes are the landscape.
Buses and trolleybuses cover the city and the centre is walkable. The Trans-Siberian railway passes through, connecting west to Yekaterinburg and east across Siberia.
Summer is short and warm and much the best. Winters on the Siberian steppe are long and severely cold with strong winds.
