Krugersdorp lies on the West Rand of Gauteng, west of Johannesburg, and grew as a gold-mining town on the reef. It is now largely a commuter and light-industrial town, with the older centre around the main street and residential suburbs spreading north toward the hills.
The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage site with extensive limestone caves that have produced major hominin fossil finds, lies immediately north of the town and is the main reason visitors come. A large game reserve on the edge of town offers accessible wildlife within easy reach of Johannesburg.
A car is effectively necessary, as the town and the sites around it are spread out and public transport is limited. The motorway network connects quickly to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
