Kediri lies in East Java on the Brantas river, beneath the volcano Kelud. It is a commercial town with a long history as the seat of an ancient Javanese kingdom, and a very large clove cigarette industry.
The volcano Kelud, with its crater accessible when activity permits, is the region's main natural attraction. The area holds several ancient Javanese temple sites from the Kediri kingdom, and the Simpang Lima Gumul monument, a startling arch modelled loosely on the Arc de Triomphe, is a local landmark.
Becak and angkot cover the town, with ride-hailing available. Trains and buses connect to Surabaya and Malang, and reaching the volcano needs a hired vehicle.
The dry season through the middle of the year is the most comfortable and the best for the volcano. Volcanic activity can close the crater area at any time, so it is worth checking before travelling.
