    Where to stay

    Neighborhood guide

Katowice is the centre of the Silesian conurbation in southern Poland, a heavily industrial region of coal and steel now substantially transformed. The city centre is modern, having been rebuilt around a striking cluster of cultural buildings on former mine land.

    What to see

    Timed to the light

The Spodek, a flying-saucer-shaped arena from the sixties, is the city's emblem and still in use. The Silesian Museum is built into the shafts of a former coal mine with galleries underground and glass lanterns above, the NOSPR concert hall beside it is acoustically outstanding, and the Nikiszowiec workers' housing estate is a remarkable brick survival.

    Seasons & timing

Late spring through early autumn is the most pleasant. Winters are cold and grey, and air quality in the Silesian basin can be poor in winter.
