Kashan sits on the edge of the central Iranian desert between Tehran and Isfahan, an oasis town backed by mountains. The old quarter holds a remarkable group of nineteenth-century merchant houses, several restored as hotels and museums.
The historic houses, particularly Tabatabaei and Borujerdi with their wind towers and sunken courtyards, are the finest domestic architecture of their kind in Iran. The Fin Garden is a World Heritage Persian garden fed by a natural spring, the covered bazaar is among the country's best preserved, and the mud-brick village of Abyaneh and the Maranjab desert are close by.
The old quarter is walkable and shared taxis cover the town. Reaching the desert, the village and the nearby ancient mound requires a hired car, and the main road and rail line pass through toward Isfahan.
Spring and autumn are much the most comfortable, and spring is when the surrounding region distils its famous rosewater. Summers in the desert are extremely hot, and winters are cold at night.
